Welcome to the Ashtanga Dublin.com website.
I’m hoping that not only will this site turn into an excellent resource to help you with your yoga practice but that it will also be a space to share inspirational and insightful information that extends beyond the mat practice.
I invite you to share your comments, insights, experiences and anything else you might want to share. Feel free to ask any questions too!
I hope to see you on the mat soon.
Happy yoga-ing!
Luke.
I just found this link in my inbox and wanted to share it.
It details the case of an Indian yogi who claims not to have eaten in decades! A study has just concluded which verified that for the 15 days he was under observation he did not eat or drink and in fact was healthier than the average 40 year old despite being over 80.
I love reading stories like this, they just confound my sense of what is possible. I don’t believe nor disbelieve that what I read is true but staying open to the possibility I find that something [...]
It’s been a really interesting few weeks for me. As you may know from the last Moon Day News I had a motor accident which required me to have several stitches in my knee and plenty of time being looked after in bed!
From being unable to walk or bend my knee to any significant degree a few weeks ago, I’ve recovered to the extent that I can now practice a full primary series again. Day by day I’ve watched the remarkable healing process of the body as each day something I was unable to [...]
As every practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga knows, the mental state during the practice is constantly changing. Every day, in every “sadhana”, our thoughts are more or less concentrated in what we are doing, in how we are doing it or in the way we are breathing for example…and somehow, it will affect the quality of the exercises.
In my experience, if my mind is really focused in following the right breathing sistem and in the same time, it is alert and tranquil, if I am doing the poses, one after the other, without any kind of rush and enjoying the moment, [...]
‘Everything is Unfolding Perfectly’
This is written on the blackboard in the kitchen in the new house I have just moved into and seeing it made me drop and feel ‘ahhh’… I’m in the ‘right’ place.
No matter what is happening in our lives it just helps to be reminded, that wherever we are, whatever we are doing is all a part of the perfect unfoldment of the totality of which we are a part.
Of course that is not to say we always feel that. It is not to say that we sometimes argue that reality should [...]
I’ve recently been exploring Patanjali, the sage most widely known for composing The Yoga Sutras. What is immediately apparent in looking at Patanjali is the mystery and near intangible quality that surrounds him. He is known as a physician, yogi, sage, philosopher and grammarian-and that’s just in his human form! It is in his mythical representation that Patanjali becomes the most fascinating. His name itself means “a fallen prayer,” or one who has fallen from grace-as if Patanjali himself is the fallen prayer, the “grace-filled one” that has bestowed his gifts upon us through the wisdom and practice of Ashtanga [...]
Ashtanga Yoga – Through the Looking Glass
“The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of it’s mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.
‘Who are you?’”
One of my favourite books when I was a child was Alice in Wonderland. I’m quite excited that a new 3D film has just hit our screen with a dark, psychedelic twist. I haven’t seen it yet and wondering what I was going to write for this Moon Day News, I suddenly imagined the caterpillar sitting [...]
Folk back home in Dublin often query why I feel such a strong need to spend so much time studying with my teacher here in Mysore. “Haven’t ye enough learned at this stage??…” is a regular question. I can fully appreciate how difficult it must be for them to comprehend what it is we’re up to here at the A.Y.R.I. I imagine many of them still muster up images of me levitating at the feet of a long bearded guru in a cave in the Himalayas…..far from it!!
The only explanation I can give is that from the first time I [...]
“Oh yogi, do not do asana [posture] without vinyasa [breath and movement combined together]” – Vamana Rishi
One of the most important and powerful elements of the Ashtanga practice is what is called in the sanskrit language vinyasa. In translation it means ‘breath connected movement’. What this means practically is that during the practice of ashtanga yoga each movement is connected with a particular breath. Each particular breath-connected movement is called a vinyasa and the way to move into and out of each pose (asana) is through a prescribed series of these vinyasas. For example, in the first sun salutation, during [...]
People have occasionally asked me if I ever get tired of doing the same yoga practice all the time (Ashtanga Yoga is based on set sequences of progressive postures). The short answer is no. While I have certainly experienced being tired, distracted, frustrated, and even bored at times, I have learned that these emotions have nothing to do with the practice itself, only my relation to it. The same can be said when I am pleased, happy or excited over my practice. By tapping into a traditional method, familiar terrain becomes the means for deeper exploration. What may seem the [...]
